If you are adventurous enough, exploring Japan on your own can be fun. Their train system is a bit complicated but once you get the hang of it, it's not too intimidating. Main issue I had was the language barrier. Whatever Japanese I learned a few years back is long gone. Still, I have no complaints. ;)
